Extended Federal Filling and Payment Deadlines
On March 17, 2021, the Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced that the federal income tax filing due date for Individuals for the 2020 tax year will be automatically extended from April 15, 2021 to May 17, 2021.
Even with the new deadline, the IRS is urging taxpayers to file soon and electronically, especially if they are anticipating a refund. Filling electronically with direct deposit if the quickest way for individuals to get their refunds, and in some instances, any remaining stimulus payments that they may be entitled to.
It is important to note just a few items regarding this relief:
- This relief DOES NOT apply to estimated tax payments that are due on April 15, 2021. These payments are still due on APRIL 15, 2021.
- The FEDERAL tax filing deadline postponement to May 17, 2021 applies to INDIVIDUAL FEDERAL INCOME TAX RETURNS AND TAX PAYMENTS DUE ON APRIL 15th, 2021 ONLY. State payment and filing deadlines vary and are not always the same as the federal filing deadline. Taxpayers should check with their state tax agency for those details.
